What is lead flashing?

When any part of a roof meets a vertical surface such an extension, chimney, roof window or a dividing wall between two terraced properties, the joint needs to be sealed to prevent water penetrating into the structure. Lead is usually used for this and it is called Lead Flashing.

Why use lead?

Lead is used because it is a very durable material which can expand and contract with varying temperatures. This is essential on a roof which is open to all the elements. Also, Lead can is also a soft metal and can therfore be worked into complicated shapes. When lead is worked into different shapes to suit different roof applications, the process is called 'Dressing'.

As well as just providing a flexible cover for joints in the roof, lead can be used to make gutters and to cover a roof completely. Lead is extremely resistant to corrosion, and provides excellent sound proofing. The only negatives of using lead as a material are that it is extremely heavy and quite expensive.
